Known for its scenery, the Fortuna Mountain Trail offers picturesque views of San Diego and the surrounding mountains. Hikers can also find colorful wildflowers and a waterfall across this six-mile path. Pet-owner approved, this is one of the popular San Diego hiking trails that is dog-friendly, as long as your furry friend stays on leash.

Cowles Mountain Trail

To enjoy the highest point in San Diego, explore the Cowles Mountain Trail. It boasts stunning views from Mexico to Orange County. Perfect for beginners, the trail includes switchbacks and a small wooden footbridge. The mountain is named after George Cowles, a local farmer, rancher, and businessman in the late 1800s. George came to San Diego from the East Coast and was known as the “Raisin King of the United States.”

Iron Mountain Trail

Another one of San Diego’s iconic hikes, the Iron Mountain Trail doesn’t disappoint. Hikers enjoy panoramic views of San Diego County. On a clear day, they can also see Catalina Island and maybe even a look at San Jacinto Peak when conditions allow. The trail spans about 5.2 miles and gains 1,135 feet in elevation. It’s open daily from sunrise to sunset and is also home to birds like the California quail.
